About the Pattern
Roses from the North and South facades of Notre-Dame of Paris cathedral are part of the masterpieces of Gothic Architecture.
The design of these ornamental motifs answers to logic geometric principles and can be therefore traced with a straight edge and compasses.
We do not have written sources on the steps and drawing principles for those wonderful roses. Study work and trial and error are therefore needed to figure out a possible construction for those motif. I will be sharing with you the result of my research process.
Course Content
This course was recorded live, around 6 months ago, hence the reduced priced.
I might do a new version of it at some point.
In this online course of 4 session, 2h30 each, over 4 weeks, I am offering you a dive into the geometric art of those roses, through the specific example of the Souhtern Rose from Notre-Dame of Paris (sessions will be recorded and available as replay for all signed up for at least 1 year).
We will first see some simple yet essential elements of gothic architecture, such as little flower motifs (called trefoil, quatrefoil etc. depending on their petal numbers) and arches principles. Then we will see the main structure of Notre-Dame South rose, before assembling all the elements in a large drawing.
We will proceed step by step, from the beginning, it is possible for geometry beginners to sign up, yet it is advised to have some (even if little) experience of drawing geometry with a ruler and compasses, as large gothic roses are ambitious motifs.
