About the Pattern

In this exciting new collaboration between Lucie Rose Galvani and Clarissa Grandi, you will learn how to construct and ornament a stunning Gothic rose window with a butterfly wing stained glass effect infill.

Although it is preferable to have some basic knowledge of geometric drawing, the workshop would be suitable for beginners in ruler and compass construction who are up for a challenge.

Course Content

A brief summary of the sessions:

On Saturday, Lucie will lead us step-by-step through the ruler and compass construction of this exceptionally beautiful Gothic rose window from Leuilly Church, Laon, France.

Amongst other techniques, you will be learning how to divide a circle into 6, 12 and 24, and how to construct the flowing lines and elegant curves of this design. You will also learn how to widen the lines to create the effect of the surrounding carved stone tracery.

Lucie will finish by demonstrating how to use your compass to trace one sixth of the design onto tracing paper, and how to use this 'slice' to transfer the full pattern onto a separate sheet of watercolour paper, if desired.

On Sunday, Clarissa will lead you through the decoration of your pattern with a unique stained glass effect infill inspired by the delicate beauty of butterfly wings.

We will first look at how to outline the tracery in pen, either freehand, or using your compass, and how to use an imagined light source to shade the tracery to acheive a 3D carved stone effect.

We will then design one half of our butterfly wings on tracing paper, before transferring this design across the whole window.

Finally, Clarissa will demonstrate several different methods for adding colour using commonly accessible art materials such as fineliners, felt tips, marker pens and coloured pencils, as well as watercolour pencils and paints.

Please note that you will be provided with a copy of the final pattern for you to print off and practice on during Sunday's session, in case your own version is not yet finished and ready for decorating.
